Shedding old skin comes with a price—the price of being fully naked.
We’re constantly sold solutions, and we eagerly buy into the promises of transformation. But the true cost of being honest with yourself? It’s your old life.
I might come across as a bit dramatic—okay.
Being honest with yourself is the biggest gift of all… that hurts like a motherf*cker. But it is so worth it.
Today was interesting. Not the day I planned. It was raw and messy—not the perfect one I envisioned the night before. I gave up control and the pursuit of perfection. I let go of the need to perform and be socially accepted, and I just lived this day through. Allowing it to show and teach me where I needed to be honest with myself.
And I was honest with myself to the bone.
I didn’t like it. I didn’t ask for it. Well, I did ask for change. So…
I allowed myself to feel my own feelings, to be in my own presence. At first, it was like cracking my skull open—and that is the whole point.
This article isn’t here to teach you something. My experience—this article—is here to invite you to embrace the messiness. To let go of the performative agreement to buy into the socially acceptable “norm.”
Feel the feelings. Be present—the revolution is that easy. And hard at the same time.
But it’s not supposed to be anything you had expected. It is just going to BE. You always have a choice – join the ride or leave everything as is. The second feels easier. But ease does not mean aliveness.
Are you living, or simply going through the motions?
Do you even allow yourself to have space for life to occur?
Are you stuck in the current version of what is expected? And if you were to be really honest—you might discover the truth that hurt?
Truth only hurts if we have been feeding ourselves lies for too long.
This might seem like a weird invitation. But I’m inviting you to your messy. Go there. Trust you’ll know what to do. See for yourself what you just might discover.
The real reason it is messy is because when feelings get involved, a lot of people check out. I was one of them.
For a long time, I thought the chaos around me was the problem. But when I started embracing my depth, I was hit with a horrendous truth: I was the one escaping myself, my own depth, my feelings. It had nothing to do with the world around me.
It took one messy day of truly living to see it — I was the one with the agency to feel my feelings, to name them, and to stay rooted in my truth. Not to drown in what others were adding to the situation.
I’m going to give you an example.
If someone is loudly reacting, and my truth is stillness — then I go by my truth. I don’t join their emotional rollercoaster. My work is to honor the stillness. Not react to the noise. That’s the choice. That’s the muscle I’m building. That is freedom: the freedom to root stronger in my own roots.
But that kind of freedom only comes from presence and the courage to live in the question. It takes practice, and a lot of messy not-knowing, to get there. At first, it’s disorienting. It is uncomfortable and honestly means you are doing it. Growing.
Emotional literacy and independence are skills — they can be cultivated. They come from mastering your focus and recognizing your own locus of control. Meaning you dive into your mess and while being present in your body dissect one by one what it is I am feeling and why. A lot of work? Try living a numb life – how’s that?
Shedding old skin means a lot of things. But for me, it began with one powerful act: keeping my focus within my agency — tuning into how I felt in my body at any given moment. And when I finally got that — after the mess, after the uncertainty — I found myself welcoming something I never knew I was missing: Me. The real one without the noise. But for that, I needed to shed some old skin.
If you’re ready to dive deeper into shedding old skin and finding your own peace, I’ve created a way to support that journey.
